This one is for the young producers in my DMs always asking me how to improve. Here are my top 5 tips — free of charge, because I want to see Ghana win.

1. STUDY YOUR CULTURE FIRST
Before you copy what is popular on TikTok, learn your own music. Listen to K.K. Kabobo, Ebo Taylor, Amakye Dede, Pat Thomas. Understand Ghanaian rhythms. That knowledge is your competitive advantage.

2. LESS IS MORE IN AFROBEATS
New producers always want to put 50 elements in a beat. Strip it back. The hits that move the crowd usually have 4-6 main elements: drums, bass, lead, texture, and space. Space is underrated.

3. LEARN TO MIX ON CHEAP SPEAKERS
If your mix sounds good on cheap earbuds, it will sound great everywhere. Do not mix only on expensive studio monitors — most Ghanaians will hear your music on their Nokia or Tecno speaker.

4. COLLABORATE MORE THAN YOU COMPETE
Ghanaian producers compete too much. The Nigerians collaborate and that is partly why they dominate. Call another producer. Make a beat together. The pie is big enough for all of us.

5. RELEASE CONSISTENTLY, NOT PERFECTLY
Done is better than perfect. Release music every month. Build an audience. A perfect beat nobody hears is worthless. An imperfect beat that 10,000 people connect with changes your life.

I have been producing for over 8 years. Here is my honest assessment of where the African music industry stands in 2025.

THE GOOD:
• Streaming revenue is finally becoming real. Nigerian and Ghanaian artists are making serious money on Spotify, Apple Music, and Audiomack.
• African artists no longer need to relocate to America or UK to succeed globally. Burna Boy, Wizkid, Amaarae — they all built their brands from Africa first.
• DSPs (Digital Service Providers) are investing in Africa. Boomplay has over 100 million users on the continent.
• Music tech is democratizing production — a GHS 3,000 phone and FL Mobile can produce chart-topping music today.

THE CHALLENGES:
• Piracy is still destroying royalty income in Ghana and across Africa. Solutions are being built but it is slow.
• Live performance infrastructure is weak in most African countries. Promoters still underpay or don't pay at all.
• The "big record deal" mentality is fading which is good, but indie artists need more support structures — lawyers, accountants, managers who understand African markets.
• Mental health support for artists is almost non-existent. I have seen talented people leave music because of burnout with no support system.

FINAL WORD:
Africa is the future of the global music industry. I genuinely believe this. The demographics alone — youngest continent on earth, massive growing middle class, smartphone penetration increasing every year — it all points to an explosion.

But we need to build the infrastructure ourselves. Nobody is coming to save us. Let's go! 🔥

This debate never gets old in Accra. Every time I am at the studio, the older producers say Highlife is the true Ghanaian sound. The younger ones say Afrobeats is where the money is. Who is right?

Honestly? Both of them.

Highlife is the roots. It is where we come from. When you hear Highlife, you hear Ghana — the guitar licks, the talking drum, the horn sections. It is the sound of our grandparents. It is the sound of celebration, of harvest, of homecoming. It cannot die.

Afrobeats is the present and future. It carries our rhythms but packages them for the world. When a Ghanaian Afrobeats song plays at a club in London or Houston, that is our culture traveling without a visa.

The real answer is this: Ghana's music identity is strongest when we blend both. The artists who are truly putting Ghana on the map — like those mixing Highlife chord progressions with modern Afrobeats production — they are the ones the world is watching.
